2016 National Disabled Fest Rocked The Motor City

(Updated 4/16/16) USA Disabled Hockey was front and center, April 7th-10th, as it's 2016 National Festival was here in Detroit.  The action featured teams made up of disabled veterans, standing amputees, blind / visually impaired, deaf / hard of hearing, special needs, and sled teams in both the junior and senior divisions.  Teams were from all over the US, with Michigan being represented by the Grand Rapids Sled Wings in both the junior and senior divisions, the Michigan Sled Dogs in the senior division, and a team of disabled veterans, the Michigan Warriors.  The games started Thursday afternoon and took place at two locations, Fraser Hockeyland and St. Clair Shores Civic Arena.  The championship games in most divisions took place on Sunday, including a game featuring 12 year-old phenom Ben Stewart of the Ohio Blue Jackets (AAA), playing with adults in the standing amputee division... click here for the article.  We have a monthly disabled hockey event at Crystal Fieldhouse, with the goal of creating a sled team, Aaron's Ice Raiders, named after Aaron Berry, a 12 year-old paraplegic who's wish is to be able to skate.
